Mackenzie Shirilla Jail Call: Her Father’s “Magic Wand” Remark Before Sentencing

A jail call involving Mackenzie Shirilla and her parents offers a revealing look at the family dynamic before her sentencing. The conversation shifts from suspected leaks and loyalty issues within Shirilla’s social circle to what she planned to say in court. Then her father joins the call and makes a remark that changes the entire tone.
The recording does not change the evidence presented at trial or establish what happened inside the car. What it does provide is a window into how Shirilla and her family privately discussed the case, the people around them, the victims, and the approaching sentencing hearing.

What the Mackenzie Shirilla Jail Call Reveals
Shirilla was convicted in August 2023 after a bench trial arising from the July 31, 2022 crash in Strongsville, Ohio, that killed Dominic Russo and Davion Flanagan. Prosecutors argued that she intentionally drove the Toyota Camry into a commercial building at high speed. Shirilla maintained that the crash was not intentional and said she did not remember it.
She received concurrent sentences of 15 years to life for the two murder convictions. Because the call took place before sentencing, it captures Shirilla and her parents discussing the case while the consequences were still unfolding.
Her Father’s “Magic Wand” Comment
One of the most striking moments comes when Shirilla’s father joins the call. He tells her that he is angry about what she is going through and says he hopes karma comes back against the people opposing her.
He then says that, if he had a “magic wand,” he would not go back and help “Dave” first.
He says he would make everyone else disappear.
That comment is jarring in the context of a case in which two young men died. A parent’s instinct to protect a child is understandable, but the wording shows how completely the conversation centers Shirilla and the family’s belief that she was being wronged.
In the video, Paul pauses at this moment and examines the tension between a parent supporting a child and a conversation that appears to leave little room for the losses experienced by the Russo and Flanagan families.
Her Mother Uses the Coded Language
The call also includes Shirilla and her mother discussing people referred to as Rosie, Bubba, and Sammy. Shirilla appears concerned that someone in her social circle may be sharing information or associating with people she does not trust.
At one point, her mother participates in the coded language heard in other Shirilla calls. The speed of the exchange suggests it is familiar to both of them. Hearing her mother use it is notable because the surrounding conversation focuses on possible leaks, loyalty, and who should remain inside Shirilla’s circle.
They discuss questioning one friend, watching whom she associates with, removing people from a group chat, and blocking someone if the suspected connection continues. The recording presents an inner circle increasingly focused on loyalty and suspicion.
Preparing Shirilla’s Sentencing Statement
Shirilla asks her mother whether she should write out what she wants to say in court. Her mother advises her not to discuss the verdict or the proceedings. Shirilla says she does not plan to thank the judge, and her mother warns her against telling the judge that she made a mistake.
Shirilla then rehearses an apology to the families of Dominic and Davion. She says she will always be sorry and would take away their grief if she could. At the same time, she continues to describe what happened as a car accident and says she never intended it.
That distinction reflects the position Shirilla and her family maintained, that she had been wrongly convicted of intentionally causing the crash. The call does not prove whether the statement was sincere or strategic. It shows how the family was discussing and preparing it before the hearing.
Questions About Social Media and Public Attention
Later, Shirilla asks whether people are still posting about her or whether the attention has died down. Her mother says that it appears to have decreased, at least from what she can see.
The exchange stands out because public image and social media have remained part of the broader conversation around the case. Interest increased again following the release of the Netflix documentary The Crash, which revisited the evidence and featured Shirilla continuing to deny that she intentionally killed Dominic and Davion.
The call also moves into complaints about a lawyer, jail messaging terminals, commissary timing, and an unusual conversation about spirituality. Those smaller moments help show the contrast between the gravity of the approaching sentence and the everyday concerns occupying the call.
What This Call Does and Does Not Establish
The call provides context, not new proof of how the crash occurred. Shirilla is the only surviving occupant of the vehicle, and she has said that she does not remember the crash. The trial court reached its verdict after evaluating the evidence presented in court, not simply the family’s behavior in private conversations.
The recording does, however, give viewers a closer look at the family’s perspective before sentencing. It shows intense loyalty toward Shirilla, anger toward people involved in the case, concern about information leaving the inner circle, attention to public perception, and continued rejection of the court’s finding that the crash was intentional.
Paul breaks down the full call in the video, including the coded exchange, the father’s “magic wand” remark, Shirilla’s proposed sentencing statement, and the moments when her mother attempts to stop her from saying more.
What stood out most to you, the father’s comment, the discussion about sentencing, or the family’s focus on loyalty and possible leaks?
